With their very high population density and intense levels of urbanisation, regions and cities across North-West Europe are increasingly exposed to the impacts of climate change. Extreme conditions, ranging from heat stress and prolonged droughts to sudden heavy rainfall, are creating increasing challenges for urban areas and putting infrastructure, public health, and overall liveability at risk.
In response, the NWE Programme supports projects which help urban areas – neighbourhoods, business and industrial districts, and city centres – adapt and thrive in a changing climate. By supporting cities in improving climate-resilient land use planning, accelerating the development of green and blue infrastructure, and embracing nature-based solutions, NWE projects aim to reduce urban heat, manage water more effectively, and create healthier, more resilient places to live.
