What is Green/blue infrastructure ?
Green/Blue infrastructure
Green/Blue Infrastructure (GI) is based on the principle that ‘protecting and enhancing nature and natural processes […] are consciously integrated into spatial planning and territorial development’. Accordingly, the Green Infrastructure Strategy defines GI as ‘a strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas with other environmental features designed and managed to deliver a wide range of ecosystem services’ in both rural and urban settings (EC, 2013a).
Objectives
- To reduce fragmentation and the vulnerability of natural habitats and species' habitats, and take their movements into account in the context of climate change;
- To identify, conserve and connect areas that are important to biodiversity conservation through ecological corridors;
- To implement the water quality and quantity objectives set by the river basin management plans (RBMP) ;
- To take wildlife biology into account;
- To facilitate the genetic exchanges necessary to the survival of wildlife species;
- To improve the quality and diversity of the landscape.
