Experience
The City Council of Heerlen is a former coal mining region dislocated in the Netherlands. 70,000 families lost their income as the natural gas replaced the coal mining industries. This was celebrated recently by an impressive speech of Vice-Chairman Timmermans of the European Commission. The Council has together with the Province of Limburg & the Ministry of the Interior & the nearby Maastricht University & Open University developed targeted actions for youth unemployment.
