The municipality of Middelburg (48,000 inhabitants) is responsible for the public realm and the public lighting. Middelburg aims to reduce energy consumption with 35% by 2020 (compared to 1994) and to become energy neutral by 2050. In 2010 Middelburg has set a policy plan Public lighting, in which 50% energy reduction needs to be realized through controlled public lighting, while maintaining security, hospitality and liveability in the city.
