OPIN Masterclass: Blockchain for marine industry

Online, 09:00-11:00 (BST) / 10:00-12:00 (CEST)

10 March 2022

This Masterclass will focus on the benefits of blockchain for marine waste management and enhanced circularity enabled by its unique technological advantages of immutability and transparency for traceability in the marine industry.

The key is to grasp the collective nature of blockchain, circularity, and the many players in the marine industry to build valuable automated solutions on top of the core features of blockchain to make the most of MARPOL waste, avoid marine waste dumps by ships, make the most of the waste by circular practices, and explore renewable energy.  Reverse and direct supply-chain management of offshore energy requires processing a large amount of data and effective traceability and visibility, and blockchain provides the collaboration and interoperability among many suppliers dispersed over the world.

There will be a thoroughly description of ongoing developments use cases to help the master class participants figure out the useful deployment and opportunities of this fresh, disruptive technology.

AGENDA

Block 1: 10-10.45h Introduction & foundations

      1. What is Blockchain?

Blockchain is a disruptive technology that ensures provenance. To put it plainly, it validates that something was done at a certain point in time. With this knowledge, participants in a network could prove things beyond a shadow of a doubt. This has the power to avoid corruption and unlock more collaboration and value potential to back automation to unprecedented levels.

  1. Trends of blockchain and their applicability to industry.

Blockchain is hot right now. The industry has a staggering CAGR rate of over 69% between 2019 to 2025. Blockchain is no longer only relevant to cryptocurrency, either—blockchain- based applications are emerging to support many other scenarios that require decentralized data storage and accessibility.

  1. Why blockchain might fit the needs of marine industry?

The technology has a broad range of applicability, allowing connecting the supply chain more efficiently, providing the exchange and visibility of time-stamped proofed data, decreasing the industry operational costs with intermediaries and increasing security. It also allows full visibility for all parties involved with proof of work, facilitating Class Societies inspections, Port State Control and audits compliance. We’ll see examples of MAERSK

Block 2: 10.50 – 11.30h Blockchain and Marine industry

  1. Why blockchain smart port and cross-border shipping projects matter?

No wonder that logistics, transportation, shipping, distribution and supply chain management rank high on the list of blockchain spending and blockchain initiatives, right after the financial industry. We’ll see examples of Incoterms, blockchain, circularity, and the many players in the marine industry to build valuable automated improvements for the marine industry.

  1. Reverse Supply chain and circularity

Build on top of the core features of blockchain to make the most of MARPOL waste, avoid marine waste dumps by ships, make the most of the waste by circular practices, and explore renewable energy. Examples of Portnet.

  1. Sum-up: When is it worth to adopt blockchain? And How?

The key is to grasp the collective nature of blockchain, circularity, and the many players in the marine industry to build valuable automated improvements for the marine industry.

Block 3: 11.30 – 12.00h Open discussion on Blockchain and Marine industry
