In Almere this June, the residents of the world's first WikiHouse neighbourhood were welcomed. The residents not only designed the 27 low-carbon homes within Housing 4.0 Energy themselves, but they also assembled them independently.
Realised within the Interreg North-West Europe Housing 4.0 Energy project in the pilot of Almere, WikiHouse is an affordable, sustainable and digitally produced building system. The neighbourhood is a pilot project initiated by the Woningbouwatelier and made possible through European funds, with the goal of making WikiHouse ready for the Dutch market.
On the 9th of June, Almere City Councillor Froukje de Jonge officially welcomed the first three residents: "I am proud that the world's first WikiHouse neighbourhood is in Almere. It fits in with our tradition of innovative and experimental housing. The residents have worked incredibly hard. By taking the helm themselves, they now have a home that is fully tailored to their personal needs. The involvement and building it themselves creates ownership."
