On June 11th-14th 2019, the British Geological Survey (BGS) performed a four-day geophysical investigation in a former landfill site (Stockley Park) near Heathrow Airport, London, UK.
As for the RAWFILL pilot sites, a combination of different geophysical methods were applied in order to characterize the site. First, magnetic and electromagnetic mapping were carried out in order to get a quick overview of the subsurface, with the aim of evidencing potential lateral variations in the cover layer thickness as well as areas of increased metal or plastic content based on lateral contrasts in conductivity or magnetic susceptibility.
In a second stage, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) were applied on several profiles. The main goal of these techniques is to image in more details the composition and the extension of the waste at depth.
