On November 12th- 15th 2018, the British Geological Survey (BGS) and the University of Liege (ULg) performed a four-day geophysical investigation on one of the RAWFILL pilot sites – Les Champs Jouault landfill- located in Normandy, France.
For this first survey a combination of different geophysical methods were applied according to the characterization objectives and the morphological situation of the site (e.g. geology, waste thickness, vegetation, presence of geomembrane, etc.).
First, magnetic and electromagnetic mapping were applied mainly to identify zones of increased metal content or other lateral contrasts in the conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of the waste.
Secondly, a set of methods were applied to have more information on some physical properties changes with depth. These methods were: Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW), horizontal to vertical noise spectral ratio and ground penetrating radar (GPR). If the contrast is enough, these methods will provide information about layers of different waste composition, the thickness of the waste body and the thickness of the overlaying cover layer.
The BGS together with the ULg are working together to present the final report with the geophysical results and to design the optimized sampling survey to achieve a more complete characterization and a geophysical calibration.
