Bringing Vertical Gardening to Life in Ireland

Bringing Vertical Gardening to Life in Ireland: A Sustainable Sensory Garden

In a quest to explore innovative ways of gardening in Ireland, it was decided to delve into the world of vertical farming and gardening. The primary aim was to find an approach that was easy to use, adaptable, adaptable and environmentally friendly. The journey began with small-scale trials, and the knowledge gained from these initial trials laid the foundations for a larger installation.

After the initial trials, the project used the 'PlantBox living wall system' to create a larger installation. This larger installation will form part of a sensory garden display in a community-based horticultural enterprise in Donegal, Ireland.

What makes the PlantBox system particularly appealing is its scalability, modularity and ease of use. It's essentially a prefabricated system that can be easily stacked and expanded. What's more, it's environmentally friendly, being made entirely from recycled plastic. Each modular unit even comes with a self-contained, self-watering reservoir, making it a breeze to keep plants hydrated using a clever felt mat and capillary action.

Each PlantBox unit is identical, measuring 60cm long, 20cm high and 15cm deep. The project began with a trial of 10 of these modular units stacked vertically and side by side. When this trial showed promising results, it was decided to take the plunge and purchase a further 100 units.

With 100 PlantBox units in hand, the team is now working on a more substantial vertical gardening structure. This structure, using the same modular systems, will soon grace the Donegal nursery as part of a sensory garden experience.

It's an exciting expansion, with the initial trial structure being scaled up tenfold to a total of 100 individual modular units. These units will be creatively arranged in both vertical and horizontal displays.

To nurture these thriving vertical gardens, they'll be filled with high quality peat-free compost combined with biochar, a substance known to improve soil quality and plant growth. The garden's plant selection will be a mix of tactile, fragrant and visually stunning plants. There may even be a dedicated section for edible herbs and plants to tantalise the taste buds.

So when these vertical gardens come to life, they will not only add a touch of green beauty, but also exemplify a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to gardening in the heart of Ireland. The future of gardening looks greener than ever!
