Di-Plast - Digital Circular Economy for the Plastics Industry

Project Summary

Issue
Use of recycled plastic material (rPM) in NWE is homogeneously low. In packaging and building, the highest plastic consuming sectors, only 8% (787kt)/18% (978kt) of plastic employed is recyclate (Plastics Europe 2016). Impeding factors are: unclear recyclate quality, unstable supply, insufficient awareness (EuPC 2017). Dependence on volatile virgin material markets & heavy burdens on the environment & human health ensue.
Di-Plast starts in DE, NL, LU and rolls out to NWE. Focus is on packaging and building B2B-supply chains secondary materials. This is advantageous as main products in both are thermoplasts (PE, PP, PS, PS-E, PVC); employed in extrusion production processes. These similarities may result in synergies between the sectors.

Changes
Di-Plast improves processes for a more stable rPM material supply and quality: sensoring generates data within supply chains; data analytics provides information about rPM quality, amounts, and supply timing; Value Stream Management improves rPM processes & logistics, environmental assessments validate sustainability. 4 pilots enable 12 companies to improve rPM uptake by 4kt. Uptake managers (UM) enable 90 companies to introduce the technologies and understand benefits of recyclates resulting in 18kt uptake.

Output
4 pilots improving uptake with 12 companies we support to introduce new processes. The output will be replicable & adaptable for dissemination in NWE & the EU. We support 90 companies to improve rPM uptake by 18kt,  we create 1 rPM uptake toolkit with 6 tools, a website with information, tools & learning material, 5 regional UMs enabling uptake in the sectors, and increased digital recycling readiness of 102 companies.

Long-term
10 years after project end distribution of results and output embedded with multipliers increase rPM uptake in NWE and EU by 131kt, 900 companies supported. Tools are further advanced for other industries and export.

Next Step - expert interviews

With our survey we got first insights into the challenges when using recyclate. The next step are expert interviews in order to get a deeper understanding of the challenges when using recyclate. If you have specific challenges in your value chain while using recyclate, you might be an interesting partner for such an interview. Don't hesitate to contact one of the partners on the landing page that fits best for your convenience. Tell us which tools would help you to improve the uptake of recyclate.

Thanks for participating in our survey about the use of recyclate - the survey is closed - next step are personal interviews

Our survey on the use of plastic recyclate was aimed at companies from the entire value chain. With your participation you contributed to the knowledge base for the development of our toolbox. The Toolbox will be designed to provide digital solutions that improve the use of recyclate. The more precisely you answer the questions, the better we can design the solutions. Join in and benefit from the results later. The survey is anonymous. If you are interested in using the resulting tools, you can contact us directly via the addresses on the start page. The survey is available in English and German. Thank you very much again for helping us developing useful tools!

You can participate

Di-Plast needs participation of related partners from the plastics value chain. Stakeholders from along the value chain are important for the results (and success) of the project. In each phase of the Project inputs from stakeholders influence the progress of Di-Plast and also results from the project can be used by stakeholders in order to improve their use of recycled plastics material.

The next opportunity to be part of it will be our survey regarding the requirements of enterprises that handle plastics material.

The Survey will start in March 2019, so stay in contact or better: if you are interested send an E-Mail to one of the Partners on the startpage.

And there will come many more opportunities to participate for Partner from the NorthWestEurope Area. Feel free to ask.

Here you find the public echo on Di-Plast in press, journals and other media. We are happy that Di-Plast arouses interest in the community. If you want to write an article about the Project feel free to contact one of the partners in Germany, the Netherlands or Luxembourg. Contact data are on the startpage.
